China’s Medical Cities: Where to Go for Each Type of Treatment in 2026

One thing that surprises many international patients: China’s medical strengths aren’t all in one city. Different cities have different specialties, and choosing the right destination can be just as important as picking the right hospital.

I’ve lived in China for 15 years and visited hospitals in most major cities. Here’s my honest, no-nonsense guide to which city is best for which treatment.

Beijing — Complex Surgery & Academic Medicine

Beijing is China’s medical capital, with more top-tier hospitals than any other city. If you have a complex condition that needs the best expertise possible, Beijing is usually the answer.

Top hospitals: Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) — China’s #1 hospital for 14 years running. Fuwai Hospital — the country’s top cardiac center. Beijing Tongren Hospital — #1 for ophthalmology. Beijing Jishuitan Hospital — leading orthopedics. Peking University Third Hospital — #1 for fertility. Beijing Children’s Hospital — top pediatrics.

Best for: Complex heart surgery, cancer surgery, rare diseases, eye care, fertility treatment, pediatric complex conditions, and neurological surgery.

Considerations: Beijing’s top hospitals are incredibly busy. Wait times for specialists can be 1–5 days (still excellent by global standards). International departments are well established. Costs are slightly higher than in other Chinese cities but still 60–80% below Western prices.

Shanghai — Cancer, Cosmetic Surgery & Premium Care

Shanghai rivals Beijing in medical quality and often beats it for patient experience and international accessibility.

Top hospitals: Ruijin Hospital (DNV-certified, top in immunology) — excellent for complex internal medicine. Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital — China’s #1 for plastic surgery. Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center — world-class particle therapy. Shanghai Eye & ENT Hospital — top ophthalmology. Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital — the best private hospital in China. Shanghai Children’s Medical Center — top pediatric cardiac care.

Best for: Cancer treatment (proton therapy, CAR-T), cosmetic and plastic surgery, eye surgery, pediatric cardiac surgery, and a premium international patient experience. Shanghai is also the best city for patients who want a Western-style hospital with full English support.

Considerations: Higher costs than other Chinese cities (but still far below Western prices). A strong international community means good English support. Jiahui and Parkway offer the most seamless luxury medical experience in China.

Guangzhou & Shenzhen (Pearl River Delta) — Dental, Cancer & Southeast Asia Gateway

The Pearl River Delta has become a major medical tourism hub, especially for patients from Southeast Asia. Its proximity to Hong Kong, Macau, and ASEAN countries makes it a natural gateway.

Top hospitals: Guangdong Clifford Hospital (JCI since 2003, CIHA 2026) — a pioneer in integrative medicine. Fuda Cancer Hospital — world-renowned for minimally invasive cancer treatment. Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center — top ophthalmology. Shenzhen Children’s Hospital — over 100,000 cross-border pediatric patients since 2023. Plus many high-quality dental clinics at competitive prices.

Best for: Dental tourism (Shenzhen is China’s #1 dental destination), cancer treatment (Fuda’s cryoablation and NanoKnife), ophthalmology, pediatric care, and TCM-integrated treatment.

Considerations: Prices are lower than in Beijing or Shanghai. Shenzhen is especially popular for dental work—a tooth implant that costs $5,000 in the US might run $400–800 here (about ¥2,800–5,600). Many Hong Kong residents cross the border for medical and dental care. English support varies but is improving.

Chengdu — TCM, Medical Value & Panda Therapy

Chengdu offers some of China’s best medical value, combined with one of the most enjoyable travel experiences in the country. It’s my personal favorite for mixing treatment with tourism.

Top hospitals: West China Hospital — one of the largest hospitals in the world by volume, excellent for cardiac surgery, organ transplantation, and general complex care. West China Hospital of Stomatology — top-tier dental school. Sichuan Provincial TCM Hospital — excellent TCM care.

Best for: TCM treatment, dental work at West China Stomatology, cardiac surgery at West China Hospital, and general medical care at value prices. Also great for combining treatment with a visit to the Panda Research Base.

Considerations: Prices are 15–25% lower than in Beijing or Shanghai. Fewer English-speaking doctors, but West China Hospital’s international department is improving. Chengdu’s food scene is legendary—just avoid the spicy stuff during recovery!

Hainan (Haikou & Sanya) — Medical Tourism Zone & Wellness

Hainan is unique: it’s the only place in China with a special medical pilot zone (Boao Lecheng) that allows access to drugs and devices approved overseas but not yet approved in mainland China. Add tropical beaches and visa-free entry for 86 countries, and it’s a powerful combo.

Key facilities: Boao Lecheng Medical Pilot Zone — 36+ medical institutions, 560+ innovative drugs and devices. Sanya TCM Hospital — treated 100,000+ overseas patients from 40+ countries. Hainan Boao Super Hospital — international-standard private care.

Best for: Access to cutting-edge drugs not yet approved in most Asian countries (especially cancer immunotherapy), TCM wellness retreats, and combining medical treatment with a beach vacation. The 48-hour expedited medical visa is a major plus.

Considerations: Hainan’s general medical infrastructure is less developed than Beijing or Shanghai. It excels in specialized treatments at Boao Lecheng and TCM wellness, but for complex surgery, you’re better off on the mainland.

Kunming (Yunnan) — Border Medical Hub

Kunming has become a hub for patients from neighboring countries—Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Bangladesh—offering extremely affordable care with geographic convenience.

Best for: Spine surgery at exceptionally low prices (as low as $1,400, about ¥9,800), general medical care, and health checkups. Particularly popular with Bangladeshi patients who used to go to India.
