Things to Do in Dunhuang (敦煌)

3 must-see attractions and 5 total things to do.

Dunhuang is a living museum. Every temple, street, and structure has a story stretching back centuries. I've curated 5 experiences — 3 of them are non-negotiable.

I recommend at least 2–3 days in Dunhuang. You can comfortably cover the 3 must-sees in 2 days, then explore at leisure.

1. Mogao Caves

莫高窟

Museum

A UNESCO World Heritage site with 492 cave temples carved into a cliff, containing 1,000 years of Buddhist murals and sculptures.

3-4 hoursBest: Early morning (first entry slot at 8am)
Tips:
  • Book tickets at least 3 days ahead in peak season
  • Only 6,000 visitors allowed daily — limited entry
  • The museum at the entrance has excellent replicas if caves are sold out

2. Crescent Moon Spring

月牙泉

Nature

A crescent-shaped spring in the middle of the Gobi Desert, surrounded by the Singing Sand Dunes — a surreal natural wonder.

2-3 hoursBest: Sunset (5pm–7pm) for the best light and coolest temperature
Tips:
  • Climb the sand dune for the best photo angle
  • Bring a scarf to cover your face from blowing sand
  • Camel rides are available at the entrance

3. Singing Sand Dunes

鸣沙山

Nature

Massive sand dunes that emit a humming sound when wind passes over them. Offers dune hiking, camel trekking, and sandboarding.

2-3 hoursBest: Late afternoon for golden light and cooler temperature
Tips:
  • Rent sand boots — the sand gets extremely hot by midday
  • The 'singing' sound is most noticeable on windy days
  • Bring plenty of water

4. Yumen Pass

玉门关

Landmark

The ancient gateway to the Western Regions on the Silk Road, with ruins dating back 2,000 years.

1.5 hoursBest: Early morning
Tips:
  • Combine with a visit to the Han Great Wall ruins nearby
  • Bring sun protection — there is zero shade

5. Shazhou Night Market

沙州夜市

Food

Dunhuang's bustling night market with lamb skewers, cold noodles, and local crafts under string lights.

1.5-2 hoursBest: Evening (7pm onwards)
Tips:
  • Try the apricot water — a local specialty
  • Bargain on souvenirs but prices are already reasonable

Must-Try Local Food

In Dunhuang, the food is an adventure in itself. Here are my picks for what to eat — if you skip these, you haven't really been.

Lanzhou Pulled Noodles

兰州拉面 · ¥15–25

Hand-pulled beef noodle soup — a northwest staple that originated along the Silk Road.

where Any halal noodle shop near Shazhou Market

Lamb Skewers

羊肉串 · ¥3–5 per skewer

Cumin-spiced lamb skewers grilled over charcoal — the signature street food of the northwest.

where Shazhou Night Market

Apricot Water

杏皮水 · ¥5–10

A refreshing sweet-tart drink made from local dried apricots — perfect for the desert heat.

where Any drink stall in the city

What Travelers Say About Dunhuang

“

The Silk Road itinerary Peng put together was incredible. Dunhuang, Turpan, Kashgar — places I'd dreamed about but had no idea how to navigate. She arranged local guides who were actual historians. Came back with photos I'll treasure forever.
