Things to Do in Guangzhou (广州)

4 must-see attractions and 5 total things to do.

Guangzhou is a city you experience through your senses — and none more so than taste. Beyond the 5 attractions listed here, the food scene deserves a category of its own.

Most visitors spend 2–4 days here. With 4 must-see attractions, I recommend pacing yourself — hit 2–3 per day and leave room for spontaneous discoveries.

1. Canton Tower

广州塔

Landmark

The 600-metre icon of modern Guangzhou with observation decks, glass floor, and a Ferris wheel at the top.

2 hoursBest: Late afternoon to watch sunset + city lights
Tips:
  • Book tickets online to skip queues
  • The glass skywalk is optional but thrilling
  • The light show at 7pm is spectacular

2. Temple of the Six Banyan Trees

六榕寺

Religious

A 1,500-year-old Buddhist temple with the iconic octagonal Flower Pagoda.

1 hourBest: Morning
Tips:
  • Free entry
  • The pagoda is 17 storeys but you can't climb it
  • Peaceful despite being in the city centre

3. Shamian Island

沙面岛

Landmark

A tranquil former colonial concession with European architecture, leafy boulevards, and cafes.

1.5-2 hoursBest: Late afternoon for golden light on the colonial buildings
Tips:
  • Great for photos — bring a camera
  • The咖啡馆 (cafes) here are excellent
  • Combine with a Pearl River walk

4. Chen Clan Academy (Chen Family Temple)

陈家祠

Museum

An elaborately decorated 19th-century ancestral hall covered in stunning ceramic sculptures and wood carvings.

1.5-2 hoursBest: Morning
Tips:
  • The roof sculptures are the highlight
  • It's now a folk art museum
  • One of the best examples of Lingnan architecture

5. Yuexiu Park

越秀公园

Park

Guangzhou's largest park — home to the Five Rams Statue (the city's symbol) and Zhenhai Tower.

1.5-2 hoursBest: Morning for tai chi and local life
Tips:
  • Free entry
  • The Five Rams statue is the city's mascot
  • Zhenhai Tower has a small museum inside

Must-Try Local Food

In Guangzhou, the food is an adventure in itself. Here are my picks for what to eat — if you skip these, you haven't really been.

Har Gow (Shrimp Dumplings)

虾饺 · ¥25–45

The king of dim sum — translucent wrappers folded around plump, juicy shrimp.

where Tao Tao Ju, Guangzhou Restaurant, or any dim sum house

White Cut Chicken

白切鸡 · ¥40–70

The test of a Cantonese chef — simple poached chicken served cold with ginger-scallion oil.

where Wen Ji or local Cantonese restaurants

Wonton Noodles

云吞面 · ¥15–25

Thin egg noodles in a clear shrimp-shell broth with plump pork-and-shrimp wontons.

where Bao Yuan Noodle Shop or local noodle houses

What Travelers Say About Guangzhou

“

We were nervous about bringing our two young kids to China. Peng's family-focused itinerary was a lifesaver — she knew which temples had ramps, which restaurants had high chairs, and scheduled everything around nap time. The kids still talk about the panda visit.
