Things to Do in Jiuzhaigou (九寨沟)

4 must-see attractions and 5 total things to do.

Jiuzhaigou's beauty is best experienced outdoors. 4 attractions are absolute must-sees among 5 on my curated list — from iconic landmarks to hidden corners most visitors miss.

I recommend at least 2–3 days in Jiuzhaigou. You can comfortably cover the 4 must-sees in 2 days, then explore at leisure.

1. Five Flower Lake

五花海

Nature

The most famous lake in Jiuzhaigou — layers of turquoise, emerald, and sapphire water created by mineral deposits and fallen trees on the lakebed.

1 hourBest: Midday when sunlight is directly overhead
Tips:
  • The colours are most vivid under direct sunlight
  • The boardwalk around the southern edge has the best views
  • This is the most photographed spot — arrive early

2. Nuorilang Falls

诺日朗瀑布

Nature

China's widest travertine waterfall — 320 metres across, cascading over a limestone shelf in multiple tiers.

45 minBest: Late morning for good light
Tips:
  • Spectacular in autumn with gold/red forest backdrop
  • Winter turns the falls into a frozen ice sculpture
  • The viewing platform at the base gets the best spray

3. Mirror Lake

镜海

Nature

A perfectly still lake that reflects the surrounding mountains like a mirror — best visited before the morning breeze picks up.

30 minBest: Early morning (before 9am) when the water is still
Tips:
  • Go before 9am — wind ruins the reflection
  • The reflection of the autumn colours is surreal

4. Five-Colour Pond

五彩池

Nature

A small but brilliantly coloured pond at the top of the valley with shifting hues of turquoise, yellow, green, and blue.

30 minBest: Midday for brightest colours
Tips:
  • Smaller than expected but more vivid — don't skip it
  • Combine with Long Lake for a full morning at the top

5. Shuzheng Tibetan Village

树正寨

cultural

One of nine Tibetan villages in the valley, with traditional wooden houses, prayer flags, and yak butter tea.

1 hourBest: Any time
Tips:
  • Visit a Tibetan home for an authentic experience
  • Buy local herbs and medicinal products from villagers
  • Be respectful of religious sites within the village

Must-Try Local Food

In Jiuzhaigou, the food is an adventure in itself. Here are my picks for what to eat — if you skip these, you haven't really been.

Tibetan Hotpot

藏式火锅 · ¥60–100

A traditional copper hotpot with yak meat, mushrooms, and local vegetables in a savoury broth.

where Tibetan restaurants in Zhangzha Town

Yak Butter Tea

酥油茶 · ¥10–20

A salty, buttery tea made from yak milk — a Tibetan staple that's an acquired taste but essential to the culture.

where Shuzheng Tibetan Village

Highland Barley Bread

青稞饼 · ¥5–10

A nutty, dense flatbread made from highland barley — the traditional staple food of Tibetan communities.

where Any Tibetan guesthouse or village stall
