Things to Do in Yangshuo (阳朔)

4 must-see attractions and 5 total things to do.

Yangshuo's beauty is best experienced outdoors. 4 attractions are absolute must-sees among 5 on my curated list — from iconic landmarks to hidden corners most visitors miss.

I recommend at least 2–3 days in Yangshuo. You can comfortably cover the 4 must-sees in 2 days, then explore at leisure.

1. Yulong River Bamboo Rafting

遇龙河竹筏漂流

Nature

Gentle bamboo raft floating down a narrow river through karst peaks — quieter and more intimate than the Li River cruise.

2-3 hoursBest: Morning for misty scenery
Tips:
  • The Jiumen section is the most beautiful
  • Tip your boatman ¥10–20 for a good experience
  • Bring a waterproof bag for your phone

2. Moon Hill

月亮山

Nature

A giant natural limestone arch that looks like a crescent moon — climb 800+ steps for panoramic karst views.

2 hours (including cycle from town)Best: Early morning (before 8am) to avoid heat
Tips:
  • Bring plenty of water — the climb is steep
  • The view through the arch is worth every step
  • Combine with a countryside bike ride

3. Xingping Ancient Town

兴坪古镇

cultural

Ancient market town on the Li River with the exact view printed on China's ¥20 note.

2-3 hoursBest: Late afternoon for golden light
Tips:
  • Bring a ¥20 note for the photo comparison
  • Take a local ferry across the river for a different perspective
  • Much less crowded than Yangshuo town

4. West Street

西街

Shopping

Yangshuo's 1km pedestrian street with restaurants, bars, and shops — lively and touristy but fun.

1.5-2 hoursBest: Evening
Tips:
  • Great for people-watching
  • Street food here is better than the restaurants
  • Climbing gear shops are good for equipment

5. Xianggong Mountain

相公山

Nature

The best sunrise viewpoint in the Yangshuo area — a short climb to a platform overlooking the Li River and karst peaks.

2-3 hours (including drive)Best: Sunrise (depart town by 5am)
Tips:
  • Arrange a driver the night before
  • The 15-minute climb is easy and well-pathed
  • Misty mornings make the best photos

Must-Try Local Food

In Yangshuo, the food is an adventure in itself. Here are my picks for what to eat — if you skip these, you haven't really been.

Yangshuo Beer Fish

阳朔啤酒鱼 · ¥60–100

Whole river fish braised in beer with tomatoes, chilli, and ginger — the signature dish of the region.

where Most restaurants on West Street

Yangshuo Rice Noodles

阳朔米粉 · ¥8–15

A local variant of Guilin rice noodles with a lighter broth and plenty of fresh herbs.

where Street stalls near West Street in the morning

What Travelers Say About Yangshuo

“

We took Peng's recommended Guilin-Yangshoo itinerary and it was perfect. The Li River cruise, the rice terraces, cycling through the countryside — every day was a highlight. She booked a hotel with a view of the karst mountains that I'll never forget.
