Things to Do in Zhangjiajie (张家界)

4 must-see attractions and 5 total things to do.

Zhangjiajie's beauty is best experienced outdoors. 4 attractions are absolute must-sees among 5 on my curated list — from iconic landmarks to hidden corners most visitors miss.

I recommend at least 3–4 days in Zhangjiajie. You can comfortably cover the 4 must-sees in 2 days, then explore at leisure.

1. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

张家界国家森林公园

Nature

China's first UNESCO national park with thousands of quartz-sandstone pillars rising from the mist — the real-life Avatar mountains.

Full day (6-8 hours)Best: Sunrise for mist between the pillars
Tips:
  • Enter through the Forest Park Gate (south) for the classic experience
  • Take the Bailong Elevator up, walk down
  • The Yuanjiajie area has the best Avatar mountain views

2. Tianmen Mountain

天门山

Nature

Home to Heaven's Gate — a 131-metre natural arch — reached via the world's longest cable car (7 km, 30 min) and the thrilling glass cliff walk.

Half day (4-5 hours)Best: Early morning for clear views from the top
Tips:
  • Book the cable car ticket in advance — queues can be 2+ hours
  • The glass cliff walk is not for the faint of heart
  • The 999 steps to Heaven's Gate are steep but worth it

3. Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge

张家界大峡谷玻璃桥

Nature

The world's highest and longest glass-bottomed bridge — 430 metres long, suspended 300 metres above the canyon floor.

1-1.5 hoursBest: Morning for fewer crowds
Tips:
  • Wear flat shoes — no heels on the glass
  • Don't look down if you're afraid of heights (look straight ahead)
  • Combine with the Grand Canyon canyon walk below

4. Bailong Elevator

百龙天梯

Landmark

The world's tallest outdoor elevator — 326 metres up a cliff face, with a glass front for panoramic views as you rise.

2 min (elevator ride) + queueBest: Enter early (7:30am) to avoid long queues
Tips:
  • Go up, don't go down — the upward view is spectacular
  • Queue can be 1-2 hours in peak season

5. Yellow Dragon Cave

黄龙洞

Nature

One of China's largest karst caves with underground rivers, waterfalls, and vast caverns filled with stalactites.

2 hoursBest: Any time (indoor attraction — constant temperature)
Tips:
  • Wear non-slip shoes — it's damp inside
  • The boat ride on the underground river is a highlight

Must-Try Local Food

In Zhangjiajie, the food is an adventure in itself. Here are my picks for what to eat — if you skip these, you haven't really been.

Three Humbles Hotpot

三下锅 · ¥40–70

A Zhangjiajie specialty — a spicy hotpot with pork, chicken, duck, and vegetables cooked in a clay pot.

where Local restaurants in Wulingyuan

Tujia Smoked Pork

土家腊肉 · ¥30–50

Smoked pork belly cured by the Tujia ethnic minority — intensely flavourful, eaten with steamed buns or rice.

where Tujia-style inns and local eateries

Cili Noodles

慈利米粉 · ¥10–15

Rice noodles in a savoury broth topped with local chilli and braised beef.

where Breakfast street stalls
