Shenzhen (深圳)

China's future, today — a tech metropolis built from nothing in 40 years

Shenzhen wasn't supposed to work. A fishing village turned megacity in 40 years — but somehow it did, and spectacularly. This is China's future on display: mind-bending architecture, a tech and innovation ecosystem that rivals Silicon Valley, and a youthful energy that Beijing and Shanghai can't match. And the shopping? Unreal.

The world's most stunning urban transformation — a fishing village turned global tech hub with a skyline that rivals any city on earth.

Shenzhen is the most dramatic urban transformation in human history. In 1980 it was a fishing village of 30,000 people. Today it's a megacity of 17 million, China's technology capital, and a showcase of everything China wants to be.

Window of the World

A theme park that sounds terrible on paper and is unexpectedly fantastic in person. Miniature replicas of the Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal, Pyramids, and 100+ other world landmarks — all in one park. It's cheesy, fun, and surprisingly well-done. Go at night when the miniature Eiffel Tower lights up.

OCT-LOFT Creative Park

Shenzhen's answer to Beijing's 798 — a former factory complex turned into galleries, design studios, cafes, and concept stores. This is where Shenzhen's creative class hangs out. The weekend markets are excellent for unique souvenirs and local design.

Dapeng Fortress

A well-preserved Ming Dynasty seaside fortress that feels completely removed from Shenzhen's hypermodernity. Stone streets, ancestral halls, and a sleepy fishing village atmosphere. It's an hour from the city centre but worth the trip for the contrast alone.

Lianhua Mountain Park

The best free view of Shenzhen's skyline. A gentle 15-minute walk to the summit rewards you with a panoramic view of the CBD. There's a bronze statue of Deng Xiaoping at the top — the man who turned Shenzhen from a village into what it is today.

Shopping

Shenzhen is a shopper's paradise. From the luxury malls of Luohu (Luohu Commercial City) to the electronics markets of Huaqiangbei — the world's largest electronics market — you can find almost anything here. Huaqiangbei is especially mind-blowing: entire buildings dedicated to components, gadgets, and tech you didn't know existed.

Getting There & Around

  • •Fly into Shenzhen Bao'an (SZX)
  • •Recommended stay: 2–3 days
  • •Book trains via Trip.com in English, DiDi for taxis

Budget Tips

  • •Price level: Higher
  • •Street food is cheap and safe — eat where locals queue
  • •Use DiDi Premier instead of tourist taxis
  • •Book attractions online to skip ticket queues

Local Pro Tips

  • •Install Alipay before you arrive — most places don't take cash
  • •Download Amap for navigation — Google Maps is unreliable in China

When to Go

  • •Peak season: October–April
  • •Book hotels and train tickets 2-4 weeks ahead for best rates
  • •Avoid Golden Week (May 1-5 & Oct 1-7) — everything is packed
